In 2002, four Park City High School whippersnappers had a dream, filthy mouths and rudimentary filmmaking skills. Ryen Schlegel, Andy Bauman, Jeff Guay and City Weekly contributor Ryan Bradford went on to make humorous, well-produced shorts—always entertaining, and often absurd—on a shoestring budget.

Following a brief dry spell, Schlegel and Guay are back with an off-kilter open-mic night they hope to turn into a recurring event. It will kick off with one short work apiece by the evening’s masterminds, including Schlegel’s “Dear Taco Bell, You Owe Me Money,” and Guay’s thoughtprovoking “Don’t Worry, It’s a New Century.”

There’s a reason for the event’s nontraditional venue. “I think the films we tend to make work better in a bar,” says Schlegel. “This, I want to treat like a music show—if it’s good, you give it your full attention. … If it sucks, you get a drink and talk to your friends. Maybe it turns out somewhere in the middle.”
