Downtown Salt Lake City’s Bambara restaurant has been given a prestigious award from the National Restaurant Association: The restaurant was chosen as the Utah winner of the 2010 Restaurant Neighbor Award and honored for outstanding community involvement and innovative community programs. The award celebrates the philanthropic spirit of the restaurant industry and serves to inspire others to get actively involved in their communities. Annually, both Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco and Bambara host fundraising galas such as Dress for Success, The Trust for Public Land and its popular annual Red Party to benefit the Utah AIDS Foundation. “Because caring is a way of being at Bambara, last year, in conjunction with Kimpton’s Monaco Salt Lake City, Bambara raised approximately $38,000 dollars in cash donations, and more than $10,000 worth of in-kind donations for various charities.” said Art Cazares, Bambara general manager. The annual Oktoberfest at Snowbird Resort is back in full swing each weekend through Oct. 10, including Labor Day. According to the folks at Snowbird, Oktoberfest’s roots at the resort go back to 38 years ago when, “inspired by the towering mountains that reminded them of their homeland, two men costumed in leather lederhosen came to Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort to play their accordions and sing in their native German tongue.” I’m not sure who those guys were, but since then, Snowbird’s Oktoberfest has grown to attract some 80,000 visitors annually. In addition to der marktplatz (craft market), German bands, dancing and yodelers, Oktoberfest offers—of course—lots of beer, as well as Bavarian food, including bratwurst, weisswurst, beef roulades, spatzle and sauerkraut.
