Friday, April 24

Westminster College is home to a nationally recognized undergraduate-produced literary magazines: Ellipses … Literature and Art. It’s also home to the celebrated Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series. This weekend, the two entities join forces with a reading by renowned poet Barbara Daniels, marking the publication of 2009’s Ellipses ...

Balancing nuanced juxtaposition, often uses contradictory images and emotional duality to get at the heart and guts of life and nature. In her poem “The Woman Who Tries to Believe,” she writes, “She believes a rose turning in its moment/ of near perfection does exist apart from its dead self,/ the mat of rotted petals like a hole stabbed by crows/ in the side of a dead raccoon, crows that remember/ and seek the dead heart.” Her collection Rose Fever (2008) includes poems originally published in Ellipses …, making her an obvious choice to read at the magazine’s 2009 debut.

Ellipses publication release/Barbara Daniels @ Westminster College Dumke Auditorium, 1840 S. 1300 East, Friday April 24, 7 p.m. Free and open to the public.
