We need your help.

Newspapers and media companies nationwide are closing or suffering mass layoffs since the coronavirus impacted all of us starting in March. City Weekly's entire existence is directly tied to people getting together in groups--in clubs, restaurants, and at concerts and events--which are the industries most affected by new coronavirus regulations.

Our industry is not healthy. Yet, City Weekly has continued publishing thanks to the generosity of readers like you. Utah needs independent journalism more than ever, and we're asking for your continued support of our editorial voice. We are fighting for you and all the people and businesses hardest hit by this pandemic.

You can help by making a one-time or recurring donation on, which directs you to our Galena Fund 501(c)(3) non-profit, a resource dedicated to help fund local journalism. It is never too late. It is never too little. Thank you. DONATE

Cirque du Soleil: Alegria

Wednesday May 19

Cirque du Soleil’s classic touring production Alegria is coming to the E Center for just eight performances. Who’s in the mood for some inner-child nourishing?

I have admitted my love of Cirque du Soleil here before. It gets easier with repetition. There are clowns! There’s an orchestra! There are attractive and talented people in skin-tight clothing performing mind-blowing feats! I mean, have you ever seen a Russian Bear act? YouTube that stuff and tell me you’re not interested.

Alegria is taken from the Spanish word for “joy,” and no amount of theatricality is spared in expressing and celebrating said emotion. The production has been touring the world in its accompanying big-top tent since 1994 but has only now been reworked as an arena show, and we in our humble hamlet are the beneficiaries. Regardless of the scale, this is an event that needs to be seen. You should check it out.

Alegria @ E Center, 3200 S. Decker Lake Drive, 800-745-3000, May 19-23, $31-$93.
