We need your help.

Newspapers and media companies nationwide are closing or suffering mass layoffs since the coronavirus impacted all of us starting in March. City Weekly's entire existence is directly tied to people getting together in groups--in clubs, restaurants, and at concerts and events--which are the industries most affected by new coronavirus regulations.

Our industry is not healthy. Yet, City Weekly has continued publishing thanks to the generosity of readers like you. Utah needs independent journalism more than ever, and we're asking for your continued support of our editorial voice. We are fighting for you and all the people and businesses hardest hit by this pandemic.

You can help by making a one-time or recurring donation on, which directs you to our Galena Fund 501(c)(3) non-profit, a resource dedicated to help fund local journalism. It is never too late. It is never too little. Thank you. DONATE

Deena Marie Manzanares: Renaissance Woman

Deena Marie Manzanares performs here, there and everywhere.

From performing classic burlesque to hoop dances to belly dancing, the Voodoo Darlings is a talented group. The dancing pin-up girls have starred at festivals and upscale corporate events, even Utah Oscar Night. Deena Marie Manzanares, the Darling known as “Dixie Delight,” has many talents of her own.

Manzanares has been with the Voodoo Darlings since 2008 and also sings, acts, models and edits her own film projects. A graduate of the Atlantic Theatre Company Acting School in New York City, she also studied at the Julliard school and CAP21, New York University’s theater program. She recently played the part of Sheila Franklin in Park City’s Egyptian Theatre Company’s production of Hair.

Manzanares can also be seen in runway shows in Utah, in her weekly videos on's Video Page and in sketch comedies on her own YouTube channel ( She writes, directs and edits the sketches herself. “I want to do it all,” she says. Despite her drive to continually challenge herself, she also enjoys being in her pajamas, watching reality TV with her husband and dog. “I’m more of a homebody than most people think,” she says.

You can catch Manzanares as Shirin/Azadeh in Salt Lake Acting Company’s production of The Persian Quarter, running Feb. 2-27, or in the Voodoo Darlings Valentine’s Day-themed show in February, usually at the U’s Post Theater (245 S. Fort Douglas Blvd.).
