The Southern folk-rock created by North Carolina six-piece Delta Rae gets a dark twist from lyrics about superstition and folklore. Their 2012 debut full-length album, Carry the Fire, haunts listeners like a ghost, especially on the hit single “Bottom of the River,” which gets a goose-bumps-worthy feel out of rattling chains and stomping in the background. This group is filled to the rim with big voices, all harmonizing together, and the singers tend to take turns on lead vocals, giving variety to every song. In 2013, Delta Rae released a new EP, Chasing Twisters, and the titular single shows off their knack for brassy singing and gritty songwriting. (Camri Mecham, City Weekly)
