This month’s exhibit at Evergreen Framing is a tutorial depicting the natural fascinations of our Utah environs—but these three painters took different routes to arrive at their own perspectives on local panoramas. Don Prys arrived here by way of Michigan and a childhood in California’s San Joaquin Valley, and operated galleries in both locales. He expertly captures what is idiosyncratic about a given region.

Kate Birch studied painting and drawing at the University of Utah, and her floral paintings of birds, using additive and reductive techniques, exhibit a more finely focused brushstroke. Nathan Florence was born here, but studied at Swarthmore College in Philadelphia and the International School of Art in Todi, Italy, before becoming chair of the art department at the Waterford School. Florence’s studied technique enhances his works’ affection for the West as it is now—unsentimentalized.
