This week is all about war and its casualties. You can also attend a Honk & Wave for peace this weekend and make some noise against a likely confrontation against Syria. This weekend, you can also mark overdose awareness day at a candlelight vigil and remember the casualties of drugs who died because of their addictions and because of a lack of realistic treatment options. Later, mark Labor Day and stand up against the war on the working class by attending a free Labor Day celebration hosted by local unions.
Honk & Wave for Peace

Local peaceniks will be out this weekend making noise in support of whistleblowers like recently convicted Army Pvt. Bradley Manning. And as the United States looks to begin a bombing campaign against Syria, activists are also hoping for honks for peace. Come help make a ruckus as this gathering and meet local peace activists. Signs will be provided, or you can bring your own.

Overdose Awareness Day

Drug overdoses are one of the leading forms of accidental death in Utah, and activists are calling on community members to raise awareness of those who died chasing their addictions. Participants will meet at the Utah Capitol to hear speakers talk about the problems of addiction and the need for more treatment and sensible drug policies. Later, a candlelight vigil will be held on the steps of the Capitol; participants will be encouraged to share their stories of loved ones lost to drugs.

Labor Day Picnic
Monday, Sept. 2
Local unions such as the Painters & Tapers Local 77 will be hosting a free Labor Day picnic to offer working families an opportunity to enjoy the holiday without breaking the bank. There will be food, prizes, a car show, an inflatable slide for the kiddies and the opportunity to learn about union organizations and meet local politicians interested in workers’ issues.
