Emmy For Bar X | Club Matters | Salt Lake City | Salt Lake City Weekly
We need your help.

Newspapers and media companies nationwide are closing or suffering mass layoffs since the coronavirus impacted all of us starting in March. City Weekly's entire existence is directly tied to people getting together in groups--in clubs, restaurants, and at concerts and events--which are the industries most affected by new coronavirus regulations.

Our industry is not healthy. Yet, City Weekly has continued publishing thanks to the generosity of readers like you. Utah needs independent journalism more than ever, and we're asking for your continued support of our editorial voice. We are fighting for you and all the people and businesses hardest hit by this pandemic.

You can help by making a one-time or recurring donation on PressBackers.com, which directs you to our Galena Fund 501(c)(3) non-profit, a resource dedicated to help fund local journalism. It is never too late. It is never too little. Thank you. DONATE

Emmy and the Edison: Bar X
Congratulations must go out to a local bar of increasing renown—the kind that winning an Emmy can bring, sort of. Ty Burnell—Bar X co-investor and brother of bartender Duncan Burnell—just won an Emmy for his work on the TV sitcom Modern Family. It happens to be one of Club Matters’ favorite TV shows, and it’s associated with one of the best places to get craft cocktails in town. Bar X (155 E. 200 South) has recently come into its own with a signature cocktail. You won’t find this libation on the menu, but most of the barkeeps know its physical arrangement, so you can ask for it by name: The Edison. It’s served on ice in an absinthe-coated glass and features Buffalo Trace bourbon and grapefruit bitters. And by all accounts it is a genius creation.

Oscars: Poker In The Front
Oscars (8136 S. State) is one of the only places to get some poker action down in Murray (unless you get your partner drunk enough). Innuendos aside, the club hosts poker nights every Wednesday at 8 p.m., and there’s a chance to win real money.

Big Shiny Pub Quiz: Lucky 13
We haven’t mentioned pub quizzes lately, but they’re still one of the most educational activities to enjoy while you’re hammered. Lucky 13 (135 W. 1300 South) is the perfect venue for the Big Shiny Geek Show Pub Quiz. At the event, two local podcasts—Big Shiny Robot and The Geek Show—question players on subjects ranging from comics to TV to movies. So go geek out on Wednesdays.
