World War I, the Stalinist years, and the oppression of Communist Poland brought these two countries into an uncomfortable sisterhood. Their composers, based in strong National musical traditions, struggled with their respective governments for the rights to individual expressive freedom. This program traces the flowering of their musical tradition in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the struggle of the post-war years.
