Jazz was created in brothels and bars in New Orleans and perfected in raucous New York City clubs in the wee hours of the morning. Cathedrals are quiet places to hear a choir praising God while accompanied by a pipe organ. Nevertheless, the uniquely American art form will be paired with Old World architecture and religious relics when the George Brown Quintet plays a concert at the Cathedral of the Madeleine on the night of May 15—the Sabbath, no less.
The title of the concert is Jazz Reflections on Worship and Community, the third event in The Madeleine Festival, a series of six Sunday-night concerts that runs through June 5. All concerts begin at 8 p.m. and admission is free. George Brown, originally from Louisiana, has been leading his Utah quintet since the early 1990s.
