The show at Springville Museum of Art takes a hard look at individuals on the fringe of society and reality. They lack purpose or a sense of belonging—the homeless, depressed, marginalized, victimized or wounded.

The collection includes many examples of photo-realism, a method of painting capturing the lucidity of a moment with graphic intensity. No detail is lost, and there is a coldness created that contributes to the scenes of harsh reality. The showstoppers—such as the Chicago street scene Homeless by Max Ginsburg (pictured) or Artist’s Mother by David Jon Kaggan, showing a woman heavily burdened—are created with exactitude and without sentiment, only unabashed candor.

Other works in the show use different methods of depicting various Hard Times, each increasing the impact of the subject. The Warning by David Linn is a manifestation of spiritual suffering and has an ethereal effect. The show can be cathartic, as many viewers might recall their own experience.
