Sushi lovers, mark your calendars for May 4. That’s when the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi opens at the Tower Theatre (876 E. 900 South, 801-321-0310). Filmmaker David Gelb’s movie profiles 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, owner of Tokyo’s 10-seat Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant. Many consider Jiro to be the world’s greatest sushi chef, and the Japanese government has recognized him as a national treasure.
I’ve seen many references to Jiro Dreams of Sushi as unadulterated foodie porn. And it is. I was lucky to get an advance copy for screening, and this movie is a must for food lovers. But it’s much more than just gorgeous food on film. There’s also music from the likes of Philip Glass and Max Richter, and a dramatic story centering around Jiro and the tensions with his son, Yoshikazu, who will ultimately take over the restaurant. “Nobody takes his work more seriously than Jiro,” Gelb says.
