Sushi Dreams
Sushi lovers, mark your calendars for May 4. That’s when the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi opens at the Tower Theatre (876 E. 900 South, 801-321-0310). Filmmaker David Gelb’s movie profiles 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, owner of Tokyo’s 10-seat Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant. Many consider Jiro to be the world’s greatest sushi chef, and the Japanese government has recognized him as a national treasure.

I’ve seen many references to Jiro Dreams of Sushi as unadulterated foodie porn. And it is. I was lucky to get an advance copy for screening, and this movie is a must for food lovers. But it’s much more than just gorgeous food on film. There’s also music from the likes of Philip Glass and Max Richter, and a dramatic story centering around Jiro and the tensions with his son, Yoshikazu, who will ultimately take over the restaurant. “Nobody takes his work more seriously than Jiro,” Gelb says. Don’t miss this one! Visit SaltLakeFilmSociety.org for more information.

Swift @ Silver Fork
On Thursday, May 10, Silver Fork Lodge (11332 E. Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, Brighton) and wine brokerage Libation will host a wine dinner featuring Orin Swift wines, including two brand-new releases. Attendees will be the first in the state to taste these two new Orin Swift offerings. I’ve written about Orin Swift wines before. They are big, bold, voluptuous wines that linger in one’s memory (and on the palate) for a long time. The five-course dinner with wine pairings will begin at 6:30 p.m. and costs $75 per person. For reservations and information, phone 801-533-9977 or visit SilverForkLodge.com.

Chowder Heads
Chowder lovers take note: Market Street Fresh Fish Markets (Cottonwood, University and South Jordan) are currently running a take-home “chowder & more” special: $7.99 gets you a quart of Market Street chowder, a loaf of sourdough bread and a choice of coleslaw, pasta or potato salad—available every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, visit GINC.com.
