Shortly after founder Kenny Riches moved the gallery from its original location (now Nobrow Coffee & Tea) to its new digs a block and a half up the road, he got the notion to pursue his own artwork out-ofstate and in 2008 Jackson took charge. She immediately started booking artists from across the country to pair with and play off locals of the same caliber (For this month’s show opening Aug. 21, artists created 24 works in 24 hours).

A short time after the takeover Jackson brought in Pallone, an accomplished artist with several solo shows across the city. Now, the co-owners are living the dream, “making art, talking about art, and chatting with our artists, business-owning neighbors, and the public,” on a daily basis. The partnership also gave Pallone a new opportunity to focus more on Web design and developing Websites for businesses. In addition to her responsibilities at Kayo, Pallone sits on the executive committee for the Utah Museum of Fine Arts Young Benefactors and attends board meetings for the Utah Pride Center. She’s also a bit of a gear-head, working on her motorcycle, a 1970 Honda CL350 Scrambler, which she recently rode in the Utah Pride Parade. Outside the gallery, Jackson races around the Salt Palace Convention Center as her alter-ego Pushy, Galore, with local roller-derby outfit Salt City Derby Girl’s Death Dealers.

We submitted Jackson and Pallone to a game of musical Russian Roulette, exposing hidden gems in their collections. “My iPod has over 7,000 songs on it. I have a really eclectic taste in music,” says Jackson. “Music is really important to me. I always have something playing. Generally, I think silence is obscene unless I’m trying to sleep.”

	Tom Waits, “Circus,” Real Gone The first time I heard Tom Waits’ voice, I fell in love. His lyrics, his stories—I haven’t heard a song of his I don’t like. The man is a genius. I get sucked in. I actually have several of his albums on vinyl.
	Radiohead, “Fake Plastic Trees,” The Bends Again, another group I could listen to for days. The music, the lyrics, the voice. It all adds up to happiness.
	Weezer, “Island In The Sun,” Weezer (The Green Album) This song reminds me that I need a vacation on an island in the sun—or somewhere far, far away. “Under the Boardwalk” by the Drifters comes to mind, as well. Time to start looking into vacation.
	The Beatles, “I Want To Tell You,” Revolver Great song. Love the lyrics. How can you not like the Beatles? They’re classic. And they span so many decades.
	The Fabulous Thunderbirds, “Tuff Enuff,” Tuff Enuff I am a child of the ’80s. This is one song from my dozens of ’80s-compilation CDs. Definitely not a definitive song for me, but it’s good. I wouldn’t hit fast-forward if it came on.

	Beth Orton, “Pieces of Sky,” Comfort of Strangers I’m a big Beth Orton fan. I think I have all her albums. Her voice is so distinctive, and I love her songwriting—a longtime favorite.
	The Strugglers, “Riding,” I Am a Cold Rock. I Am Dull Grass This is from an album of various artists covering Palace songs. I have it because I love pretty much everything Will Oldham does, and can’t get enough. Really takes me back to another era of my life.
	Pink Nasty, “Street Smart,” Mold The Gold Pink Nasty is Sara Beck. This song is super-short. I actually really wish she had made it into a full track. Mold the Gold was produced by Will Oldham which is how I got turned on to her.
	Rilo Kiley “It’s A Hit,” More Adventurous What can I say? I have a crush on Jenny Lewis. This is great summer music. I love listening to Rilo Kiley loud in my car with the windows rolled down and the wind messing my hair up. This track reminds me of road tripping. Good stuff.
	Fancie, “Love Is Meat,” A Negative Capability I’m not sure how I ended up with this song, but a search on epitonic.com turns up suggestions of Mirah, Cat Power, Mia Doi Todd, etc., so I’m not surprised it snuck in there somehow.Delicate vocals and interesting, fingerpicked guitar and smart lyrics.
