Legally Blonde: The Musical

Tuesday March 23-Sunday, March 28

Mounting a Broadway musical is financially risky business, so it naturally makes sense to start with a known quantity for your libretto. Over the past 15 years, that has increasingly meant starting with a popular movie—and it’s easy to understand why something as effervescent as the 2001 Reese Witherspoon comedy Legally Blonde would be chosen.

The musical version follows the familiar storyline, as perky sorority girl Elle Woods (Becky Gulsvig, who understudied the original 2007 Broadway production) heads to Harvard Law School in pursuit of the man she expects to marry. Of course, she ends up finding herself, using her unique knowledge as part of the legal team for a murder case. Original songs by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin play on some of the film’s most familiar moments, including the legendary man-attracting advice “Bend and Snap.” Catch the fun on the show’s first national tour. If the success continues, there’s already a sequel just waiting for an adaptation.

Legally Blonde: The Musical @ Capitol Theatre, 50 W. 200 South, 801-355-ARTS, March 23–28.
