If you missed the Visual Art Institute’s postcard fund-raiser on the corner of 300 South and 200 East during Gallery Stroll on May 15, there’s still another opportunity to support the nonprofit art program for children and teens. Let’s Start Here: 1982, the Institute’s grand opening exhibition for its gallery in the old Garfield Elementary School building, looks back at that year through a number of different lenses, including installations, video and paintings at a particular pop culture environment when the Apple Computer was Time magazine’s Person of the Year and the compact disc was born. Of the nine artists in the show—Trent Call, Jan Andrews, Tessa Lindsey, Brian Patterson, Gentry Blackburn, Davina Pallone, Mary Toscano, Jim Williams and Allison Baar—several were still in the single digits back then, so for them it’s a look back at their early history as well. And VAI’s mission is to help the next generation of local artists get their start.
