While living in Minnesota, Michael LePrey fell in love with the community atmosphere of many restaurants there. Despite being in the large metropolis of the Twin Cities, these neighborhood establishments made him feel like he lived in a small town. Having previously owned restaurants such as DB Cooper’s in downtown Salt Lake City, LaPrey decided it was time to return to Utah and bring this community feel to our town.
The result is Millcreek Grill & Bar. There is something for everyone here: light fare, soups and salads, in-a-hurry express lunch (served to you in 20 minutes or it’s free), daily lunch specials, early bird dinner specials, drinks and live music.
LaPrey and his chef have more than 70 years combined experience in the restaurant industry. You can make some great food in that amount of time, and they do just that.
Take the hot sausage & chicken gumbo, the lunch special on Wednesday: andouille sausage and tender chicken breast simmered in sauce over long-grain rice. While some Cajun food screams at you with heat from the first bite, at Millcreek Grill, it’s more of a soft kick. It’s smooth, with perfect gravy-like consistency and the freshness of thyme and parsley. No need to travel to Louisiana for this bayou delight.
For a surreal salad experience, go with the walnut peach salad: grilled peaches, blue-cheese crumbles, candied walnuts, dried cranberries and Bermuda onion tossed with baby spinach and romaine in a housemade sherry-wine vinaigrette. This is a full-scale dish; you have some sweet with the peach, some strength with the onions and blue cheese, and some smooth with the vinaigrette.
