nFor those game enough to brave the influx of Hollywood elite on Park City’s main drag, Sundance Film Festival 2009 once again offers several decent options for the music lover in all of you. This year’s ASCAP Music Café, relocated from its longstanding Star Bar gigs to a makeshift venue on Main Street between 7th & 9th Streets, features a lineup of oldies but goodies along with brand new faces. ASCAP’s residency kicks off at 2 p.m. today with Rosi Golan, Tom Freund, Dan Wilson and … Gin Blossoms! Hey, jealousy, where ya been? nIn just three short years, Corey Fox has turned Provo’s Velour into a bona fide institution. How’d he do it? “I kind of look at running a music venue and working with bands like putting together a successful sports team—you scout talent, you put different bands on shows looking for combinations that might work well together, you find your starters while still nurturing along the new talent until they are ready.” Consider tonight the musical Superbowl, then, with players who are already winners in our book. Festivities kick off tonight with upbeat “party” bands Shake & Echo, Location Location, The Elizabethan Report and Seve vs. Evan. nRich Daigle fell for Django Reinhart the first time he laid ears upon the late Belgian artist’s signature sound. The local musician’s love affair with the swinging Gypsy jazz tradition took hold during a trip to a bookstore—an introduction not out of place in a whimsical, romantic movie like the ones Django’s jazz guitar often dances across. Fourteen years later, Daigle leads one of—if not the—best Gypsy jazz troupes in town and the Red Rock Hot Club wants you to enjoy the fruits of their labor with a third full-length LP featuring Django standards and some of Daigle’s original jazz compositions. Gypsy Daydream captures the sounds of Paris circa 1930s and '40s—a bona fide silver screen experience that will lift you off your feet. Come dance the night away at the official CD release. For those reading this in print and/or without easy Internet access check it: Utah Free Media is a small, volunteer-driven operation that in time could make a big impact on our community. From online radio programs to Pinpoint SLC—a handy podcast dispensing weekly advice on what’s up in local art, music, theater and more—UtahFM delivers 24-hour entertainment at no cost to the listener. Of course, as with any nonprofit, the station relies on folks like you to continue its services. Rather than hold a lengthy pledge drive, UtahFM organizers are putting on a show with special guest Carrie Rodriguez, a seasoned fiddle player with an eclectic style that’s earned her praise from Lucinda Williams, among others. After years of lending her versatile, eclectic talent to duets with higher profile artists, Rodriguez is now touring behind her sophomore LP, She Ain’t Me, a record that leaves no doubt that she is the real deal. THE SOUL OF JOHN BLACK
nNot many people can claim Miles Davis as a once-close personal friend, but up until the jazz legend’s death in 1991, John “JB” Bigham not only palled around with Davis—he wrote songs for him! Their friendship and collaboration led to JB playing in Fishbone. So, yeah: Binham is a real cool motherfunker—a smooth operator whose original blues and soul material spells danger for the ladies. But his solo project The Soul of John Black is not all sexual healing, wine and chocolate. Bigham peppers his repertoire with hard-hitting songs including the cautionary drug addict yarn, “One Hit,” off The Good Girl Blues (2007) in which the subject’s steady downward spiral includes a “making love to a transvestite” for money outside of a Hollywood taco shack. His forthcoming release Black John (out Feb. 17) delivers plenty of finger-lickin’ good tracks like “Betty Jean” which sounds like warm apple pie served with sweet organ keys. Hot damn, it’s fun-kay.
