Are Ween the Rolling Stones to the Flaming Lips’ Beatles in the great class-clowns-as-rock-visionaries pantheon? Was your mind just blown? Weezer’s disappeared again, ex-bassist Matt Sharp has returned with The Rentals … it’s like 1996 all over, especially now that Rachel Haden (’90s alt-rockers That Dog) has joined the band. Make that rejoined'Haden was founding Rentals member. Oh, and Saturday Night Live’s Maya Rudolph was also once a Rental. Why all the trivia? Because the follow-up to Clinton-era new-new-wave hallmarks Return of The Rentals (’95) and Seven More Minutes (’99) has yet to be recorded, hence nothing to report besides this tour. A New York indie-rock band named Say Hi to Your Mom has recorded an album called Impeccable Blahs. It’s about vampires, with song titles like “She Just Happens to Date the Prince of Darkness,” “Prefers Unhappy Endings” and “Not as Goth as They Say We Are.” Despite the humor'because humor and rock aren’t supposed to mingle, as any A&R man will tell you'it’s a damned fine musical collection, practically perfect. The Los Angeles foursome’s penchant for punky power-pop could be described as randy, a hot-’n’-bothered blend of sexual tension, jangle-to-jab guitars and sugary harmonies hinted at on their 2004 debut At the Friendship Motor Inn but taken right to third base in the back seat on tougher new tracks like “Born Again” and “Freezerburn” from the upcoming Saw the Light (TheRandies.com). Who remembers ’80s/’90s rockers Dangerous Toys? They had a sleazier streak than their hair-metal counterparts then, but Austin’s Broken Teeth (fronted by Toys singer Jason McMaster) are scraped off the barroom floor'if bands like Rhino Bucket and Rose Tattoo mean anything to you, that’s a plus. Broken Teeth’s bad-boy boogie is all over Blood on the Radio (BrokenTeeth.com), a live disc that shows exactly why they took Best Metal Band in this year’s Austin Chronicle music awards.
