WEEN

nn

Are Ween the Rolling Stones to the Flaming Lips’ Beatles in the great class-clowns-as-rock-visionaries pantheon? Was your mind just blown? In just over 20 years (yes, it’s been that long), Gene and Dean Ween have created some of the most strange/wonderful music in rock & roll, transcending the “alternative” tag and creating their own genre of “Ween” (or maybe “Neoclassical Boognish,” for you cultists). Their first new studio disc since 2003’s whacked Quebec may not arrive until 2007, so best enjoy An Evening With Ween now … or in your head. Either’s good. In the Venue, 219 S. 600 West, 7:30 p.m. All-ages. Tickets: 24Tix.com.

U92 SUMMER JAM

nn

This year’s stars of U92’s big-ass hip-hop party include Ice Cube, Bow Wow, Obie Trice, Play-N-Skillz, Noelle, Ray Cash, Natalie and more to come'and hell no, you didn’t forget Car Wars! Thought Mr. Cube was strictly an actor these days? June’s “comeback” album Laugh Now, Cry Later disproved that, and the reissues of his first four (Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, Death Certificate, Lethal Injection and The Predator) a couple of years ago were bracing reminders of one of rap’s indisputable MVPs. Utah State Fairpark, 155 N. 1000 West, 3 p.m. (Car Wars noon). All-ages. Tickets: SmithsTix.com.

THE RENTALS

nn

Weezer’s disappeared again, ex-bassist Matt Sharp has returned with The Rentals … it’s like 1996 all over, especially now that Rachel Haden (’90s alt-rockers That Dog) has joined the band. Make that rejoined'Haden was founding Rentals member. Oh, and Saturday Night Live’s Maya Rudolph was also once a Rental. Why all the trivia? Because the follow-up to Clinton-era new-new-wave hallmarks Return of The Rentals (’95) and Seven More Minutes (’99) has yet to be recorded, hence nothing to report besides this tour. Like you need more'it’s The Rentals! In the Venue, 219 S. 600 West, 7:30 p.m. All-ages. Tickets: 24Tix.com.

SLC TUNES LAUNCH PARTY

nn

Note to SLC Tunes: Plastering your stickers and flyers on City Weekly street boxes is no way to endear yourself to your friendly neighborhood alt-paper'and certainly not Circulation Manager Larry Carter, who’d like a few words. Back on point: SLCTunes.com is/will be an MP3 Website dedicated to local music, making downloads of Utah bands’ songs past and present as simple as iTunes; videos and (!) ringtones are next. Playing the launch party tonight are the Vile Blue Shades, Tolchock Trio and Glinting Gems (insert obligatory Dan Thomas joke here). The Urban Lounge, 241 S. 500 East, 10 p.m. Info: 746-0557.

SAY HI TO YOUR MOM

nn

A New York indie-rock band named Say Hi to Your Mom has recorded an album called Impeccable Blahs. It’s about vampires, with song titles like “She Just Happens to Date the Prince of Darkness,” “Prefers Unhappy Endings” and “Not as Goth as They Say We Are.” Despite the humor'because humor and rock aren’t supposed to mingle, as any A&R man will tell you'it’s a damned fine musical collection, practically perfect. But why vampires? “Because they threatened to bite us on the neck if we didn’t make a record about them.” Kilby Court, 741 S. 330 West, 7:30 p.m. All-ages. Tickets: 24Tix.com (with The Hotness).

THE RANDIES

nn

Sienna, Laurita, Laura and Aaron'sorry, not a Randy to be found in The Randies. The Los Angeles foursome’s penchant for punky power-pop could be described as randy, a hot-’n’-bothered blend of sexual tension, jangle-to-jab guitars and sugary harmonies hinted at on their 2004 debut At the Friendship Motor Inn but taken right to third base in the back seat on tougher new tracks like “Born Again” and “Freezerburn” from the upcoming Saw the Light (TheRandies.com). Now you’re going to go look up “randy,” aren’t you? Burt’s Tiki Lounge, 726 S. State, 9:30 p.m. (with Ironhead and Thunderfist).

nn

BROKEN TEETH

nn

Who remembers ’80s/’90s rockers Dangerous Toys? They had a sleazier streak than their hair-metal counterparts then, but Austin’s Broken Teeth (fronted by Toys singer Jason McMaster) are scraped off the barroom floor'if bands like Rhino Bucket and Rose Tattoo mean anything to you, that’s a plus. Broken Teeth’s bad-boy boogie is all over Blood on the Radio (BrokenTeeth.com), a live disc that shows exactly why they took Best Metal Band in this year’s Austin Chronicle music awards. Please, no requests for “Sport’n a Woody.” Todd’s Bar & Grill, 1051 S. 300 West, 9:30 p.m. (with Le Force).
