“I don’t like putting that much of myself out there,” Jerry Joseph said a while back, reflecting on his role as the leader of a rising rock band. The supposed introvert went on to put himself, along with the Jackmormons, “out there” for several more years. Their tumultuous decade-long career sprouted in Salt Lake City. Now based in Portland, Ore., Joseph & Co. are back in town to promote their latest album, Into the Lovely, slated for release later this month. Good news for loyal followers whose copies of 2003’s Mouthful of Copper are wearing thin. The man behind the music is a local legend, whether he likes it or not. Egos, 668 S. DIMEBAG DARRELL MEMORIAL SHOW

Last year was a rough one for musical legends. Rick James, Ray Charles and Old Dirty Bastard passed on, leaving the world a bit short on sex appeal, soul and, um, gold teeth. Perhaps the most tragic, and certainly most shocking, loss occurred right before our eyes when a deranged fan shot and killed Pantera founder and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell onstage during a concert in Ohio. Tonight, heavy-metal merchants Denots, Separation of Self, Jezus Rides a Riksha and Frustrations Gripp will rock in Darrell’s name. All proceeds go to the Dimebag Memorial Fund. Singer/songwriter/activist Woody Guthrie once said, “I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing.” Rob Wasserman never heard a Guthrie tune that made him feel anything but amazing. The versatile bassist, whose career boasts collaborations with Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Rickie Lee Jones, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia, recently organized a project to honor the man who inspired others to be somebody. Wasserman recruited Studs Turkel, Michael Franti, Ani DiFranco, Reed and others to broadcast their unique takes on Guthrie’s unpublished journal entries. The result is an eclectic stew of sexy, funny, heartbreaking words and imaginative sounds. Hear clips tonight when Wasserman teams up with Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman to keep alive the spirit of folk. It’s been a few years, and we’ve mentioned this before, but if you haven’t heard The International Noise Conspiracy’s psychedelic take on N.E.R.D’s “Baby Doll,” check it out now! The Swedish-based rockers, whose latest release, Armed Love, exemplifies the politics of dancing, really know how to get their groove on'for the right cause, of course. Just last week they hit up Austin, Texas, for a war protest, a performance that followed a gig in support of the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation. The Internet has launched countless bands, good, bad and downright obnoxious. MySpace.com is particularly adept at boosting record sales and sold-out shows for struggling artists, most notably Hawthorne Heights and My Chemical Romance, the success of which could explain why the downright-addictive Website organized a largely screamo-themed tour. Featured acts include Greeley Estates (catchy, melodic and “all about the fans”), My American Heart (underage San Diego five-piece), A Change of Pace (underage Arizona four-piece), Agent Sparks (“quirky” popsters) and The Confession (metal-core beacons in “a sea of darkness”).
