This Thursday, you can join the Occupy SLC movement as protesters celebrate the two-week anniversary of their vigil against Wall Street’s chokehold on American politics. You can also get a look at how the state budget may affect low-income services, ranging from food stamps to Medicaid funding, at a legislative committee meeting. This weekend, help the Ogden Christmas Box House by attending a Halloween benefit bash.

Social Services Appropriations
Thursday, Oct. 20

Budget battles—like all legislative fights—are always bloody. But if there’s one budget area that’s always under the crosshairs of state bean counters, it’s social services. The afternoon meeting of the committee will focus on budget reductions in the Department of Workforce Services and the Department of Human Services, and also field concerns from service providers to Utah’s low-income populations. Department of Workforce Services, 1290 E. 1450 South, Clearfield, 801-538-1032, Oct. 20, 1-5 p.m., Le.Utah.gov

Two Weeks Strong March
Thursday, Oct. 20

It’s been a month since protesters occupied the streets of New York City to protest Wall Street’s ability to buy off politicians and perpetuate the massive gulf between the haves and the have-nots in the country. Join Occupy SLC this week for the group’s two-week-anniversary march. After you hit the streets and make some noise, you can join the movement for its general-assembly meeting and learn more about the occupation and how to get involved. Pioneer Park, 350 S. 300 West, Oct. 20, march at 6 p.m., OccupySLC.org
