Paul Draper: Mysteries of the Mind

Magician/anthropologist Paul Draper returns to his hometown to perform a unique, one-man show. One part lecture, one part performance piece, Draper’s show will introduce audiences to a branch of magic called “mentalism,” in which he will present and dissect the techniques of mindreading to his audience—and even let them try to read each other’s minds.

Having spent years doing field work with American Indians and spiritualists in Louisiana, Draper honed his techniques through observation of shamans and diviners across diverse cultures. Many of his sleight-of-hand tricks will be imbued with deeper meaning as he delivers stories about the many cultures he’s studied.

As Draper explains, in the moment of awe during a magic trick, one has the opportunity to “give a special message to the audience” or “serve as a catalyst for profound change. In the study of human interaction, I have come to recognize that shamans and magicians through the ages have used this technique.”
