Hey, buuuuuuuuuddy. Yes, Pauly Shore’s shtick got old a long time ago. But there’s also a reason he became a 1990s comedy icon.
No doubt you remember his stoner Valley guy “Weasel” persona from MTV’s Totally Pauly and the movies Son in Law and Encino Man. And you might recall his stand-up comedy bits about pinching Jack In the Box breakfast croissants loaves (whatever that means) and extoling the virtues of dumb blondes with huge “cones,” all of them named Lisa—“Check out the wood you created!” Nobody forgot that he eventually hit the skids; we all checked out the road rash he created by following up two well-received comedy records (The Future of America, and its director’s cut Scraps from the Future) with the embarrassing junior thesis Pink Diggly Diggly. And, on the film side, there was Jury Duty and In the Army Now—both excruciating to sit through. Even his comeback film Pauly Shore Is Dead, an attempt to turn his humor on himself by faking his own death to see if it earned him credibility, blew chunks.
But you know what? When you go back to Future and Scraps, there’s more than nostalgia at work here. The albums are worthy entries in the stoner-comedy canon. And considering his recent track record, Shore will certainly mine the past to ensure his future, which translates to a pretty good time.
