Rant Control | Chafed About Chaffetz

Ted McDonough’s Hits & Misses column Jan. 15 made mention of the TV antics of Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Chaffetz’ sponsorship of a bill to prevent reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine—but neglected to lavish the freshman Congressman with unbridled praise, drawing much ire from members of Chaffetz’s personality cult. But it was a reader named “Typical Liberal Blather” who really dragged the discourse down to Bush-era levels: n

Well, it’s apparent that Ted [McDonough] is a left-wing liberal nutcase who can’t distinguish the reality of the benefits of a free market society that allows a cheap rag like this to even exist and thereby give him a job. What if for every leftist article he wanted to write, he was forced to allow a conservative columnist to also express their point of view in this newspaper right beside his article?

n

The “benefits” of deregulating the free market are unfounded. The results of excessive free-market policies have proved disastrous, again and again—and, if TLB thinks newspapers don’t exist in social democracies such as Sweden, he’s misinformed.

Frankly, we’re not sure where this Republican obsession with the ancient Fairness Doctrine springs from; it was abolished more than 20 years ago, and congressional Democrats have no proposals for its reinstatement. At any rate, Rant Control would like to point out that FCC regulations don’t apply to newspapers.
