With titles such as “Atoms & Molecules,” “States of Matter,” “Energy, Gravity, and Newton’s Laws,” the playbill for Repertory Dance Theatre’s performance Imagine That! reads more like a college freshman’s science syllabus than a moderndance performance.

That’s the point. This family-friendly performance aims to, according to promotional materials, “explore what makes things tick, what makes things rise and fall, ebb and flow, and will attempt to demystify the laws of physics, scientific principles and natural phenomena.” As a guiding light, “Professor” Linda Smith (RDT’s artistic director) will tutor the audience by explaining the core science behind the dance works—some older pieces combined with new choreography by RDT dancers Nicholas Cendese, Chara Huckins, Aaron Wood, Nathan Shaw and Sarah Donohue.

This performance returns to a core principle for RDT of encouraging environmental literacy through the art of dance. They feel that “maybe if everyone understood ‘what makes things tick,’ people would take better care of the earth.”
