How limited Douglas Cotant’s perspective must be; let me help broaden that view [“Rich Man’s Religion,” Letters, March 29, City Weekly].

The majority of LDS members live outside of the United States, and many (if not the majority) live well below poverty levels according to our standards. I myself grew up very poor in Southern California, and it was the LDS Church that fed and clothed my family growing up. It even helped with the rent payments that my single mother struggled to pay.

I have visited family wards on the west side of our own valley that would disagree with your small views, as well. Mormonism didn’t start out rich, either. The Mormons fought for what they have, and it makes sense that an organization that lays emphasis on education and avoiding vices such as liquor and drugs would end up being a profitable people. The world is much bigger than our quiet valley, Mr. Cotant. Why be a hater?
