Salt Lake City isn’t a center of haute couture, but the downtown area has been throwing its own shindig celebrating works of designers who have been creating their own individualistic garb. The third annual Salt Lake Fashion Stroll will roll out for an evening in which local clothing visions take form on one of the most happening streets in town—Broadway, which already sees much of the art gallery foot traffic on downtwon Gallery Stroll evenings. The event generates a festival atmosphere, with local food and craft vendors, street musicians and attendees sometimes almost as smartly dressed as the participants.
This year adds a new element: Fashion Stroll, in partnership with the Association of Fashion Designers, will present its first Style Wars competition, in which local designers will team up with models, hairstylists and makeup artists to create a statement according to the theme “psychedelic with a modern edge.” Teams will be judged based on three categories: design creativity, construction quality and teamwork for prizes.
In addition to Style Wars and hourly runway shows, Transfusion Hype Dance Company will perform at 8 p.m. The events demonstrate that it’s not just about fashion but also promoting a healthy lifestyle. The TRUTH anti-smoking campaign, which presents the event, will congratulate former smoker Alisa Wolcott for quitting the habit. She’ll strut the catwalk at 9 p.m., showing off a new hairstyle, makeup and wardrobe compliments of the organization.
Salt Lake Fashion Stroll @ Broadway (300 South) between 100 East & 400 East, 801-554-1614 Friday, Sept. 25, 6-10 p.m.
