Halloween 2010 is behind us, but some folks aren’t about to stop celebrating pop-culture creepiness just because the calendar has turned to November. Those are the kinds of people who might organize Utah’s first film festival devoted specifically to horror and science-fiction films, the Salty Horror Film Festival.

For Thursday’s opening night, see what happens when the “father of Mormon cinema” gets his gruesome on, with Richard Dutcher’s supernatural thriller Evil Angel (pictured) at the Broadway Centre, complete with filmmaker Q&A. Then, over the next three days, the Tower Theatre hosts screenings of more than two dozen brand-new feature films and shorts, including participants in last month’s 36-hour Demon Chaser filmmaking challenge. Saturday night also includes a special screening of the 1987 vampire film The Lost Boys, featuring special cast member Q&A and a musical performance by G Tom Mac (“Cry Little Sister”). And it all wraps up on Sunday, fittingly, with another movie by a director known for his LDS-themed work: Saints and Soldiers director Ryan Little’s House of Fears.

But, there’s more than just film screenings on the docket. Comic book artist Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night) and writer Ben McCool will participate in a panel discussion on horror comics Friday afternoon at the Salt Lake City Main Library; Saturday features panels on low-budget horror filmmaking with Charles Kaufman (filmmaker and brother of Troma Films founder Lloyd Kaufman). Extend the spirit of Halloween at least one more week—or, perhaps, get in the mood to carry it around with you all year long.
