The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 is not a historical event that one sees mined for artistic purposes that often, yet choreographer Monica Cambell teamed up with set/lighting designer Evan Ritter to do just that. As the summer/fall Artist in Residence at Sugar Space for the Arts, Cambell developed an evening-length work that explores this defining moment of the Cold War, utilizing the diminutive performance space in unusual and intriguing ways—making it feel even smaller than it actually is. According to Cambell, The Final Hours is not simply just a historical retelling of the student-led uprising in Budapest against their Soviet masters. Rather, the events surrounding it “act as a backdrop as the dancers explore ideas of occupation and the decision to rebel, or not. Through movement and scenographic design, we attempt to demonstrate the physical and emotional connections of those who participated in the rebellion.”
