I left for my mission a week after I lost my mom. Six months later, after the shock of my loss had faded, I waited until my companion fell asleep on Christmas Eve and called a cab to take me to the bus station. I called my dad (who’s not a member of the church), and he arranged me a flight home. My church leaders kept pressuring me to go back until I finally conceded. I was miserable the rest of my time. I didn’t care anymore, and so I stayed just to be accepted by my friends and church community back at home. I wish I had given more thought before I left since I have been a “Jack Mormon” ever since.
