Election results showed a decisive, 62 percent defeat for a school-voucher bill which had the support of Utah legislators. City Weekly asked Fred Hightower owner of Moriarty’s Antiques what this said about the Legislature’s representation of the people’s will:

I don’t have a very high opinion of them [legislators]. As conservative as the people of Utah are, the Legislature is even more conservative. They always spend the first two-thirds of the session dealing in moral business that doesn’t serve the constituency, then they get down to the business of the state in the waning hours. It doesn’t change … as soon as I saw the election results, I said to my wife, “I wonder what other form they’re gonna try and pass this bill [vouchers] next?”
