Rockin’ with Mick & Allen of KBER’s Freak Show

comment

City Weekly is asking locals what’s playing on their iPods and assorted digital toys'brand-new tunes, classic favorites, etc.'right now, and why. This week, Mick Martin and Allen Handy of KBER 101.1’s Freak Show (weekdays, 2-6 p.m.) submit tunes from their personal playlists. Lessons learned: Allen likes to rock, while Mick has a sensitive (!) side.

Allen: “Guitar rock is back! It’s great to hear a band with a lead guitarist again. The whole CD is awesome and hasn’t left my player for three months.”

Neil Diamond, “We”

Mick: “From the new album, 12 Songs'although on a whole the album bores me a bit, it’s great to hear Neil getting back to his roots. ‘Love, It’s not about you, it’s not about me, love is all about we.’ Listen to the song and be we.”

Nickelback, “Far Away”

nn

Mick: “My girlfriend told me to listen to this song because it reminded her of me. It brings me close into me, a place inside where I feel warm and fuzzy, where love is all that matters when the day is done. ‘Never let me go, hold onto me’ Let me love you.”

nn

Jay Z & Linkin Park, “99 Problems”

nn

(2004, RockaFella.com)

nn

Allen: “Jay Z is a great storyteller, and Linkin Park add just enough power to take this song to another level. I try to drive without the kids so I can listen to this one more.”

nn

Donny Osmond, “What I Meant to Say”

nn

(2005, Donny.com)

nn

Mick: “I grabbed this album after seeing him on a talk show. Donny played the title track and it reached into my soul and actually brought a tear to my eye. How often do we go through life not saying what we meant to say until it’s too late?”

nn

Bowling for Soup, “A-hole”

nn

(2004, BowlingforSoup.com)

nn

Allen: “I listened to this song over and over after I first heard it. I guess it’s because I too am ‘just an a-hole sometimes!’”

nn

The Darkness, “Get Your Hands Off My Woman”

nn

(2003, TheDarknessRock.com)

nn

Allen: “I didn’t think it could get any better than ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ off of Permission to Land, but this song went even more whacked, and I loved it!”

nn

2002, Across an Ocean of Dreams (album)

nn

(2002, 2002Music.com)

Mick: “If you’re into meditation or grounding, anything by 2002 is awesome. When I close my eyes, I become a mermaid and go to my secret retreat and dream, and realize the potential that lives in me. So bring it on, I get to face my day.”
