National Trail Days

Annually, National Trails Day—begun by the American Hiking Society—is celebrated nationwide with thousands of events. Visit AmericanHiking.org for events in the Wasatch, including trail maintenance and weed removal in Millcreek Canyon. Information, waivers and work specifications are available online. Specific logistical information will be mailed to participants. All tools, a light breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt will be provided. Save the Wild Mustangs Fundraiser
Tuesday, June 7
According to the nonprofit Save the Wild Mustangs, more than 2 million horses roamed wild in America 100 years ago. Now, there are only 15,000 in 10 states—down from 28,000 last year, due to federal roundups. Because of nationwide petitions, the spring mustang roundup was postponed to July 1 to gather 5,000-8,000 more horses. So, Save the Wild Mustangs is racing against the clock to get help petitioning, raising awareness, supporting wild-horse adoption, acquiring sanctuary land and funding the documentary Healing Power of Horses. Salt Lake County Redistricting Commission
Thursday, June 9
Every 10 years, voting boundaries and school districts are realigned; as such, the county council is in the midst of changes before the 2012 elections. The deadline for its three alternative plans is Dec. 31. It’s still early in the process, but you can drop in to make public comment or hear the various reports by commission members.
