What's Best for the Girl

While reading the cover story “Gone Baby Gone” [April 30, City Weekly], I could not help but feel heartsick. It seems that there are deep flaws in the system and a lack of communication between the Division of Child and Family Services, Mexican authorities and the birth mother.

I feel for this grandmother, and I understand her need to be a part of her granddaughter’s life.

However, there is another side to this story. To say that, “It’s not fair she stays with strangers” is a misguided statement. This sweet child in question has been raised and loved by the Hesses since she was 3 weeks old. To this child, they are her family, and her birth parents are the strangers.

It should not be an issue about race; it should not be about what Grandma wants. It should be about what is best for this little girl, and the courts have made that decision.
