ZAP Performing Arts Festival

In the newly re-named Eve celebration on the verge of 2010, the Rose Wagner Center is the site for more urbane, high-culture entertainments: The final night of the fest features some of the most notable local musical, theatrical and dance companies. The venue’s Jeanné Wagner Theater and Black Box Theater provide spaces for the former First Night’s presentations of theater, movement and musical reverberation.

For seasonal fare, there’s Mountain West Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. Wasatch Contras demonstrates contra dancing for beginners for those looking to teach their feet something new, and Park City Chamber Music performs the traditional repertoire of the small, intimate classical combo.

The climax to the conflagration is a showcase of Pygmalion Theater Company’s The Passion of Sister Dottie S. Dixon: Second Helpings, closing out the three-day fest on New Year’s Eve with a sequel to the local smash one-woman show talked about as far afield as The Huffington Post. It’s another recounting of the “spirichual” journey she’s taken to acceptance of her son Donnie’s homosexuality, a humorous lesson in local culture and tolerance. The New Year’s Eve fest that has tripled in size has included a colorful casserole of creations that is as much inspiration as celebration.
