Find yourself with a hole in your social calendar Saturday night? Find religion with a free show by roots-rocker Chuck Prophet.---
For the unfamiliar, Chuck Prophet was a teenage wunderkind who found himself joining seminal San Francisco country-rock crew Green on Red when he was still a teenager, playing with the band for eight years and writing tunes for eight albums. The non-stop touring across the states and Europe turned him into a road warrior, and also led to him becoming an addict, first of heroin, then of crack, before he came out the other side as a cleaned-up solo artist.
He remains a prolific writer and producer; he's a veteran of projects with Warren Zevon, Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann, and he co-wrote the recent Alejandro Escovedo gems Street Songs of Love and Real Animal. Now he's touring in support of his own, excellent Let Freedom Ring! set, including a free gig Saturday at The Canyons at 6 p.m.
