Wine Wednesday: Clean Slate Riesling

If you find German wine labels to be challenging reading, you're probably going to like this one. Clean Slate Riesling is a wine from Germany's Mosel River Valley, clearly aimed at the American wine-buying market. --- Not that there's anything wrong with that. It sells normally for $12.99 but is on sale this month for $9.99.

The name of this Riesling refers to the thin slate stones of the Mosel River Valley vineyards where the grapes are grown. According to the winery, "Reflecting and retaining heat, the slate is essential to ripening grapes in this cool climate." The result is subtle minerality that lies beneath the wine's fruitiness: ripe peach flavors with hints of lime. Overall, Clean Slate Riesling 2010 is crisp, lively, and very well-balanced.

You can drink this with a wide range of foods, from mild pork and chicken dishes to seafood, sushi and curries. It pairs very nicely with Asian flavors and is a slam-dunk with grilled scallops.
