Apparently, Wednesday, Aug. 1 was the day anti-marriage activists developed a hankerin' for some chicken. Marriage opponents* turned out in droves to blow their lunch budgets in support of Chick-fil-A's Chief Operating Officer, Dan Cathy the Chicken Prince**, in reaction to public outrage sparked by Prince Cathy's recent remarks that gay marriage invokes God's wrath against America, makes Baby Jesus cry, and is just plain yucky.

Now, we live in a nation that values free speech above all other freedoms, so Cathy was perfectly entitled to express his misguided views about how LGBT Americans should be denied the same legal rights that he and other heterosexual Americans are guaranteed. And, since the courts have ruled that money is speech, and corporations are people***, Chick-fil-A is within its rights to donate millions of dollars to whatever organizations it chooses, even those that seek to harm LGBT Americans such as Exodus International and the Family Research Council.

By the same token, considering that every dollar spent at Chick-fil-A goes to oppress gay people, Americans who support equality are well within their rights to choose to spend their chicken dollars elsewhere. A boycott is not hate speech, and it doesn't violate anybody's First Amendment rights. The Corporate Personhood Doctrine does not grant corporations the right to get their feelings hurt.

* It's ridiculous when the media refers to people who believe gay marriage should be illegal with the imprecise, politically-correct euphemism "marriage supporters." They don't support marriage; the whole issue bringing them together is that they oppose marriage for couples who are different from them. Even the mealy-mouthed euphemism "supporters of traditional marriage" is misleading. Hell, I support traditional marriage. My parents, grandparents, and my brother were all legally married to traditional opposite-sex spouses. And I'm all for it. My partner and I support marriage so much, in fact, that we'd like to share the same civil and legal benefits other Americans are guaranteed. I simply don't see how that could give a loving God any reason to smite the whole nation.

** Dan Cathy is commonly misidentified in the press as the CEO of Chick-fil-A. According to the company's website, Cathy serves as COO; his father S. Truett Cathy is founder and CEO. That makes Truett the Chicken King and, by extension, Dan is the Chicken Prince.

*** Considering the fact that various laws, at various times in the history of our ebulliently erratic nation, have not only redefined money and corporations, but also have redefined the mathematical constant pi as equal to 3, and a black slave as three-fifths of a person, it's difficult to see how Republicans could have the gall to complain about "redefining" anything, let alone civil marriage.
