Summer sequel season is in full swing for Memorial Day weekend, with two CGI-ful extravaganzas, plus a few slightly more unique entries on the indie scene.

Writer/director Whit Stillman takes on a little-known Jane Austen novella in Love & Friendship, a charmingly hilarious perfect match of filmmaker and material. The romantic square of A Bigger Splash is full of thrilling directing choices and a great Ralph Fiennes performance, only falling short in emotional connection to all the characters.

MaryAnn Johanson finds Alice Through the Looking Glass  (pictured) continuing the chaotic, charmless theme restaurant nonsense that Tim Burton started a few years ago. The terrific production design of High-Rise  isn't quite enough to give its allegorical depiction of class warfare enough bite.

In this week's feature review, X-Men: Apocalypse continues a superhero franchise with nothing new to say, except to make sure it's said louder.
