Salt Lake City's Wasatch Roller Derby held a home-teams bout Saturday, June 9 at the Derby Depot; WRD's Matt Bergstrom recaps the action:

Once again, Wasatch Roller Derby’s home teams took to the track to see who would rule the Derby Depot in 2012. In their last two meetings, it was the Black Diamond Divas who outscored their rivals, the Hot Wheelers. ---So, the Wheelers came into this bout with something to prove.

Both teams were primed to win this competition, and it was clear from the start neither was willing to give up an inch. Jammers from both teams struggled to find a route through the boisterous pack. When the jammers were able to break pack, each side was only able to put up a few points at a time. Five minutes before the close of the first half, the score was tied at 41 points per team.

But fortunes shifted as the Hot Wheelers’ Penny Slain stepped up for a power jam. This allowed the Wheelers to go into the second half with a wider than 20-point lead over the Divas.

Halftime at the bout featured a whirlwind green-on-white scrimmage with the men of Uinta Madness, Utah’s only all-male roller-derby league. In true men’s derby fashion, the Madness skated hard and hit harder. The dudes were granted the opportunity to show off their skills, as they are preparing to travel to Boise, Idaho, June 30 to take on their rivals, the Capitol City Skull Crushers.

After a raucous halftime, the girls came back to the flat track with fresh legs, and blood in their eyes. Confident from their surge late in the first half, the Hot Wheelers hit the track with renewed vigor. They managed to stay a step ahead of the Divas for the rest of the bout. In spite of an amazing last minute, high-scoring jam from the Divas’ Smack ‘n’ Deck’er, the Hot Wheelers turned the tide on the Black Diamond Divas’ winning streak with a 140 to 107 victory.

There will be a brief lull in the derby action at the Derby Depot (located at 1415 S. 700 west) while Wasatch’s travel team, the Midnight Terror, head to California for a double-header that could land them an invitation to this year’s WFTDA Western Regionals. But the action heats back up July 14, when Wasatch Roller Derby hosts an all-day Derby Extravaganza. The day will include clinics for players and refs, scrimmage bouts for spectators, contests, BBQ and a movie premier that evening. Keep your eyes on WasatchRollerDerby.com for more details.
