Here at City Weekly, we like to think we support local artists who think outside the box. Now we want to support what they think about the outside of our box. ---
City Weekly is putting out the call to local visual artists to become one of 10 finalists whose canvas will be the street boxes that hold our print publication throughout Utah. Artists have between now and June 20 to complete their vision of turning a simple black rectangle into something glorious to behold -- and the deadline is a firm one, because the winners will be displayed during this year's Utah Arts Festival, and thereafter in public locations to be determined.
Naturally, there are a few restrictions. The box itself must have the City Weekly name included somewhere, and can't be altered so drastically that it can't, you know, continue to hold newspapers. All artists will also have to sign a release acknowledging that the box and the work contained thereon remain the property of City Weekly. And since they'll be on public thoroughfares, some degree of sensitivity to prevailing community standards is probably in order.
