Dear GYA, I just had a cool idea for a Top Gun sequel. It's 20 years into the future. The USS Missouri battleship has just been taken over by a group of ex-military terrorists. They secure the entire ship by force but forget to clear the galley --which is conveniently run by a disgruntled but lethal chef named Ice Man (played by me, of course). ---I then go on a killing spree and retake the ship with a stripper sidekick who jumps out of a cake. I call it Top Gun II: Under Siege. Anything happening this weekend as awesome as that? Doubt it. - Val Kilmer
Val, I love the idea. Get Kenny Loggins on the soundtrack and you've got yourself a winner. Though nothing will top Top Gun: Under Siege, here are a few things happening this weekend anyway. Let's start with Friday's events:
- Check out some great local music and vote for who should win Utah's band of the year at the City Weekly CWMA Showcase at Urban Lounge this evening. Tonight's lineup includes music from Secret Abilities, Hang Time and Eagle Twin. Doors open at 9. There's a $5 cover.
- In Park City, The Egyptian Theatre will be hosting Dark Horse Company's presentation of Reefer Madness: The Musical. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $44.
- Bone Thugs in Harmony alumni Flesh-N-Bone will be onstage at The Complex this evening. The Duct Tape Gang are also on the bill. The show starts at 8. Tickets are $20.
- Hal Holbrook's Broadway musical Mark Twain will be happening at the Capitol Theatre, starting at 8 p.m.
- Australian songwriter Paul Kelly will be performing at The State Room at 9 p.m. Dan Kelly will open up. Tickets are $18.
- Local stand-up comedian Jay Whittaker will be on the mic at Wiseguys West Valley this evening. The stow starts at 7:30. Tickets are $12.
- For a taste of local music, check out one (or both) of the City Weekly CWMA Showcases happening tonight. In Provo, Muse Music will be hosting Book on Tape Worm, Golden Sun and Polytype. There's a $6 cover. The all-ages show starts at 8. Or head to the The State Room and check out Matteo, Mideau and L'Anarchiste. The show starts at 9. Cover is $5.
- DJ and producer Bonobo will be at Urban Lounge, beginning at 9 p.m. El Ten Eleven is also on the bill. Tickets are $20, though currently the show is SOLD OUT.
- Liberty Park will be the site of the Earth Jam 2013 festival (follow the link for more details). The party starts at 11 a.m.
- James Blake will be at The Depot this evening. FattyDL is also in the lineup. The show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $19.
- The Shred Shed will be hosting The Elements hip-hop festival tonight, featuring rap battles, breaking dancing, graffiti artists and live performances from local rappers like Atheist, Dine Krew and House of Lewis. The party starts at 8. Tickets are $10.
- The Geek Show Fifth Anniversary Party will be happening at Brewvies today, starting at 4 p.m. Afterward, stick around for a free screening of the latest episode of AMC's Mad Men, brought to you by City Weekly, True TV, Bohemian Brewery and, of course, Brewvies. The show starts at 10.
- Experimental musician That1Guy & The Magic Pipe will be at The State Room this evening. Captain Ahab's Motorcycle Club is also on the bill. The show starts at 8. Tickets are $15.
- NPR humorist David Sedaris will be performing at the Capitol Theatre, beginning at 7 p.m.
