Siale Angilau, was shot dead by U.S. Marshalls in federal court in April and to this day members of Utah's Pacific Islander community are still searching for answers about the use of force.---

Tonight a vigil will be held outside the same federal courthouse where Angilau was shot repeatedly after he was said to have lunged at a witness with a pen or a pencil, during a federal racketeering case against Angilau related to his involvement in the Tongan Crips Gang.

As City Weekly previously reported, members of Utah's Pacific Islander Community were saddened to hear of the shooting and did not seek to justify Angilau's threatening of a witness, but still question the use of force as well as the application of the hefty racketeering charge against the gang.

Advocates like Charlene Lui of the Utah Pacific Islanders Justice Coalition also lamented the loss of the life of Angilau. “Regardless of whether Siale was a member of a gang, he’s still someone’s son, brother, nephew, grandson—he’s a human being.,” Lui said. “We all deserve some dignity and respect.”

Tonight the Raise Your Pen%uFFFDCoalition%uFFFDwill host a vigil at the courthouse and participants are encouraged to wear black or traditional Polynesian clothing and to bring only flame-less candles, as wax candles are not allowed on the premises.

The vigil will be tonight, June 11, from 7-8:30 p.m at the south side of the plaza and steps of the federal courthouse at 351 S. West Temple.
